Morrisburg – The Seaway Surge 13u team captured the championship of the Matthew Krol Memorial Baseball tournament in Ancaster, Ontario.
The Surge capped off a dominant weekend with a come from behind 7-5 win over the Caledonia Bears in Sunday afternoon’s championship game. Cooper Smith took the mound for the Surge and pitched 4 solid innings with 8 Ks. However, Caledonia started the game strong and took an early 4-1 lead into the third inning.
The Surge bats finally got going when Matteo Winterhalt lead of the bottom of the 3rd with a single and followed that up with a stolen base. Rowan McCooeye then laced a single to centre field that scored Winterhalt. After a McCooeye stolen base, Ben Drew hit a line drive to right that scored McCooeye, cutting the Bears lead to 4-3. After a scoreless 4th and 5th inning, the Bears added a run in the top of the 6th to extend their lead to 5-3.
The Surge offense finally got on track in the bottom of the 6th when Drew led off with a single. Smith then found his power stroke and hammered a fastball over the centrefield fence for a game tying 2-run Homerun. Nolan Kennelly then walked and was driven in by a Matt Lewis ground rule double that gave the Surge their first lead of the game. Grady Jones singled to right field and drove in Lewis that allowed the Surge to take a 2 run lead into the last inning. After getting a fly ball out to left and then walking 2 batters, Lewis struck out the final 2 Bears hitters to seal the championship for the Surge.
