Silver Medal For Kemptville’s St. Micheal
Kemptville – Last Tuesday, St. Michael successfully hosted “The Noonan Invitational”, an eight-team Intermediate Boys basketball tournament in Kemptville.
Since the early days of St. Mike’s, over the years legendary Mustang coach and Intermediate teacher Tim Noonan regularly convened countless tournaments in multiple sports. Noonan worked tirelessly to ensure that his Mustang athletes would have opportunities to compete with multiple teams from across Eastern Ontario.
Unfortunately, recently Mr. Noonan has had to take a step back from teaching and coaching to deal with personal health issues. The coaching staff at St. Mike’s decided to revive Noonan’s annual basketball tournaments and officially name them after their originator. (FYI: The Intermediate Girls basketball version of the Noonan Invitational will take place March 21st).
With teams from North Grenville, St John (Perth), Ange-Gabriel (Brockville), Turnbull (Ottawa), and St. Mark (Prescott), along with a pair of teams from St. Mike’s, the tournament had a wide variety of participants.
Ange-Gabriel had a very strong day and eventually cruised to the gold medal. The surprise, though, was their opponent in the championship game. With a team made up of only Grade 7 students, St. Mike’s second unit scored a pair of exciting over-time wins over Turnbull and one of the North Grenville Knights teams to advance to the big game. (The “cardiac kids” actually narrowly avoided double-overtime versus North Grenville with a dramatic end to end layup by Josh Stellar as the final buzzer rang.)
