BECKWITH TOWNSHIP – Officers from the Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) assisted by members of the Snow Vehicle, All Terrain Vehicle, Vessel Enforcement / Education (SAVE) Unit investigating collisions in on Mississippi Lake in Beckwith Township are satisfied that they are two separate incidents.

One is being investigated as a Fatal Collision and the other as a Minor Injury Collision.

At 03:45am on Sunday January 6, 2018 officers responded to a report of a passenger vehicle through the ice near Craig Shore.

On arrival the officers located an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) commonly referred to as a “Side By Side”. The ATV was partially submerged with its lights on.

While searching for people involved the officers established that there was another vehicle, now known to be a Volkswagen passenger vehicle, through the ice. It was this vehicle that was the subject of the original call.

The Volkswagen incident is the focus of the single fatality investigation. An adult male, who escaped from the car, was transported to hospital to be treated for the effects of Hyperthermia

The public is asked not to travel the lake between:

The West. Pretties Island (ie. Pretties Island Road)

The East.   Craig Shore (ie. 9th Line of Beckwith and Tennyson Road)

Both investigations are active and ongoing.
