Rockport – A body, believed to that of an Ottawa boy, missing in the St. Lawrence River near Rockport, Ontario since September 1, 2018 has been recovered.
On October 19, 2018, members of the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), OPP Marine Unit members, the OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit (FISU), Leeds and Thousand Islands Fire Service, Canada Border Services, as well as private divers recovered the body.
The coroner will confirm the identity of the body, which was located in the area where the 11-year-old boy went missing.
The OPP investigation into the incident is continuing.
On September 1, 2018 at approximately 4:00 p.m. Leeds County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a possible drowning on the St. Lawrence River, west of Rockport. It was reported that five people had been thrown into the water when the boat they were in capsized. Four people were rescued, but an 11-year old boy failed to resurface and could not be found. The boy is from Ottawa and had been vacationing with his family.
The OPP, the Rescue Coordination Centre at Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Canadian Coast Guard and the Leeds and Thousand Islands Fire Department all responded, along with members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who had been in the area and members of the public.
Alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
