Ottawa — The Ottawa Police Service’s Organized Fraud Section has identified an ongoing fraud trend and want to warn the public and merchants about it.

Small business retailers are being defrauded over the phone by persons using stolen credit cards. The scam involved a phone sale of gifts or food, under the premise of a gift for a family member, and it always includes the demand for cash to be placed with the order. The person pays with a credit card over the phone, and the item is then picked up at the business. The card is later deemed to be stolen.

Any person/business who has been victimized by such as a scam can report it to police by calling 613-236-1222, ext. 7300, or file a report online at www.ottawapolice.ca.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call Ottawa Police Organized Fraud Section at 613-236-1222, ext. 5433. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or by downloading the Ottawa Police app.
