LEEDS – On April 11, 2018 at approximately 3:30 PM members of the Leeds and the Thousand Islands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded and provided support for 2 active grass fires. Front of Yonge, Athens and Elizabethtown fire units responded to a large grass fire on Temperance Lake Road and another on Graham Lake Road.

Both fires caused significant damage to property and almost saw an evacuation of residents in the area. Fire departments were able to get both fires under control and extinguish them fully. Investigators believe the cause of the fires to be from vehicle occupants carelessly discarding their burning cigarettes out the window.

Leeds County OPP are reminding motorists to be mindful and properly discard their cigarettes.
