Prescott – The Grenville County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind residents to be extra cautious when near the water this spring. Melting snow, spring rain and increasing daytime temperatures are beginning to fuel rising levels of rivers, creeks and streams throughout Grenville County.
This time of year, the water is dangerously cold and currents are strong and fast flowing. Even areas such as culverts can become extremely dangerous for children, who may be drawn to play at the water’s edge. People and their pets should stay back from the water’s edge, which may be slippery or subject to erosion from the spring runoff. Parents are reminded to be aware of these spring hazards and always accompany your child anywhere near the water.
Boaters are reminded to be on the look-out for floating debris carried into the river from rising and faster flowing tributaries, or from parts of docks which may have become dislodged during the winter months.
Enjoy the spring and be safe!
