Smiths Falls – On Monday, June 5th, 2017 at the regular meeting of Council, Mayor Shawn Pankow will be presenting three Smiths Falls Police Officers with Certificates of Bravery on behalf of the Town and Council. The three officers, Sgt. Paul Klassen, Cst. Dan King and Cst. Michael Gallagher will receive the certificates for their acts of bravery on April 28th, 2017 when they entered the burning building at 8 Pearl St. and rescued a woman trapped in her apartment. The officers were told there were still people in the fully engulfed, three storey, 22 unit apartment building. In the thick black smoke, the officers were able to locate the woman banging on her apartment door. The woman and the three officers made it out to safety. The three officers were treated at hospital for smoke inhalation.
Chief Mark MacGillivray stated, “I am very proud of all of the officers, firefighters and paramedics who responded that day and got the scene under control. A special thanks to nurses, Sandra Millotte and Jane Doyle for their quick medical assistance to the three officers when they exited the building. Also special thanks to GIM driver, Tom Jackson for assisting one of our bike patrol officers expediting his arrival on the scene. I am very grateful that there were no serious injuries that day.”
