We are all Muslim today: Message from CHEO – OCTC’S President and CEO
Like you, I was shocked by the horrific murder of innocent Canadians last night in Quebec City. Such brutality is always sickening. But hate crimes are more than ugly acts of random violence. Such crimes seek to strike fear and anxiety into the hearts of an entire group of people. That is their deliberate and intended purpose. And we can’t let that happen here.
Our countless Muslim patients, families and co-workers speak many languages and trace their origins to countries all over the globe. Some are born here, others have chosen to build new lives in Canada. Many will have had to reassure their children this morning that they are still safe. Most will feel this event very personally.
At CHEO and OCTC, we are a diverse community of people that stands united in our mission to serve kids and families. Every single day, we should treat every single person with respect, empathy and compassion. On this particular day, I ask you to reach out to individuals and families who may be struggling and express solidarity and support. If you see harassment or unacceptable behavior in the community, please call the Ottawa Police Hate Crimes Unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 7300.
In the words of Martin Luther King Jr: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Let us all be agents of light and love,
