Legion Dominion President met with Veterans Affairs Canada to discuss Budget 2017

Today, Dominion President David Flannigan met with Veterans Affairs Canada representatives to receive a detailed explanation of Budget 2017 and to discuss The Royal Canadian Legion’s public and vocal concerns with how – and how quickly – the federal government is moving forward to fulfill its promises to take care of our Veterans and their families. While details of the budget are still to be determined, the March budget did commit to resolving some important issues, including mental health, transition services, education, and benefits for families. Others items mandated by the Prime Minister did not come through fully, and the Legion continues to press for changes.

At today’s meeting, we reaffirmed our steadfast and abiding commitment to not let up until the government steps up and provides the critical supports and lifelong financial security Canada’s ill and injured Veterans deserve and were promised in the mandate letter.

This weekend, Legion representatives from every Provincial Command will meet for the semi-annual Dominion Executive Council meeting.  We will continue to mobilize and press Veterans Affairs Canada to move quickly on implementing all the recommendations brought forward over the past few years by its own Ministerial Advisory Groups. We believe in honouring our Veterans and will do so by advocating for the care and benefits our Veterans so rightly deserve.
