Brockville – United Counties of Leeds & Grenville Council passed a resolution committing $75,000 toward building Rideau Canal dock infrastructure to improve access to the World Heritage Site. Funds are to be financed through the 2018 budget.

The Town of Smiths Falls, a mid-point of the 202-kilometre UNESCO site, is undertaking the development of a new boat marina and docks at an estimated cost of $521,000. The project will increase water access capacity for all communities, including Leeds and Grenville municipalities, along the historic canal. Building a network of water access facilities was identified as a priority in a 2013 Visitor Experience Opportunities Concept report.

Smiths Falls is putting $221,000 toward the project and is seeking additional partners. It has also received confirmation from Valley Heartland Community Futures Development Corporation for $46,741 over two years.
