Brockville – The 2017 senior male athlete of the year at Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) has won $6,000 in entrance scholarships to the University of Toronto.
Cade Wykes, a wide receiver with the TISS Pirates football team, earned a $4,500 football scholarship and a $1,500 academic entrance scholarship to study chemical engineering.
“We’re very proud of Cade,” said Principal Terry Gardiner. “He is a tremendous athlete and one of our best students. Cade is the whole package. He’s a talented athlete who is also humble and polite. He’s a great kid and we’re happy for his success.”
Wykes graduated last month with an average of 94%. At commencement, he won the Principal’s Award for Student Leadership as well as the 3M Canada Award for a student going on to study math, science, engineering or engineering technology.
The 18-year-old was the most valuable player on the Pirates football team this year, and anchored the TISS 4 by 400 men’s open relay team at the 2017 OFSAA Track and Field Championship, winning gold. Wykes also won bronze in the men’s senior 400 meter race.
