Perth – Thousand Islands Secondary School won the 2017 Upper Canada Cup Intermediate Boys’ Basketball Championship Wednesday, beating Perth and District Collegiate Institute before a hometown crowd.

The Pirates defeated the Blue Devils 47-33, after fighting back from a seven-point deficit in the first quarter of the game.

Coach Larry Henry said his team was thrilled with the victory after losing to Perth in the semi-finals last year, adding his squad had matured and gained both the experience and focus needed to become champions. Aidan Henry and Raef Wykes provided the scoring leadership on the court, while rebounding from Owen Henderson and inside play from Emilio Coburn helped seal the victory.

Four other schools participated in Wednesday’s tournament: Rideau District High School, Seaway District High School, Tagwi Secondary School and North Grenville District High School.
