Mississauga – At approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 27, 2017, officers with the Smiths Falls Police Service and with the Ontario Provincial Police Rideau Lakes detachment responded to an unknown trouble call at a residence in the Township of Rideau Lakes. Three separate police pursuits with a pickup truck connected to the residence were initiated and then terminated. At approximately 11:10 p.m., the driver of the pickup truck was involved in a single vehicle collision. The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against any officer in relation to the serious injuries sustained by the 30-year-old driver.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
- report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
