Smiths Falls – Students at Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) will plant a Vimy Oaks seedling at the Smiths Falls Cenotaph during a ceremony on Thursday, May 18th, 2017.
The seedling has been grown from a “Vimy Oak” acorn. The Vimy Oaks are famous trees produced from acorns brought back from the Vimy battlefield a century ago by a Canadian soldier and planted in what was then a fruit farmer’s field in Scarborough.
The 4 p.m. planting ceremony will be the culmination of a wider, inquiry-based educational project at the high school involving elements of learning in English, media arts, social studies, civics, and hospitality. A public reception will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Smiths Falls.
