Portland – The 16th annual International Big Rideau Lake Speed Skating event, or “Skate The Lake” is being held January 25th & 26th on the Big Rideau oval in Portland.
There are a lot of activities over the two days for spectators including Sleigh Rides, Crockicurl, Bumper Ball, Free Kids skating area, as well as “Skate tails”, Snert, Chili and
Warming areas, bonfires and much more.
Registration is open on Friday, January 24th from 2:00pm to 6:00pm with practice time for skaters depending on ice conditions.
Registration is again open on Saturday, January 25th starting at 7:30pm until 30 minutes prior to first race.
The Portland Hall Board is hosting a breakfast starting at 8:00am and a spaghetti lunch at noon.
Opening ceremonies begin at 8:30am with the national anthem song by Carolyn Bresee along with speeches from local dignitaries and the official “Cutting of the Ice” by Portland Outdoors President John Bongers.
The first race of the day is the Adult 10K starting at 9:00am followed by the Adult 25K race at 10:30am. The Kids 5K race starts at 1:00pm followed by the 5x 1K Relay at 2:00pm.
After the last race on Saturday there will be public skating with music and a light show by Johnny 5 and fireworks at dusk.
On Sunday the first race, the 5K begins at 9:00am followed by the 50K at 10:00am.
