Brockville – A second new pedestrian crossover is now operational at the intersection of Ormond Street and Bramshot in Brockville.

On Friday morning, City officials and members of the Brockville Police unveiled the new Pedestrian Crossover at Ormond Street and Bramshot Ave.

This crossover is part of the Brock Trail north-south extension. It is the second crossover to be installed, with the one at Rivers Ave. and King Street West being the first. Police say that this crossover carries the same rules as the Pedestrian Crossover on King Street West, however, is completely different in design.

Brockville Police want to educate the public regarding Pedestrian Crossovers. There will be more crossovers to be intsalled in the next year or so in the city.

As of January 1, 2016, drivers – including cyclists – must stop and yield the whole roadway at pedestrian crossovers.

These new rules do not apply to pedestrian crosswalks at intersections with stop signs or traffic signals, unless a school crossing guard is present.

Only when pedestrians and school crossing guards have crossed and are safely on the sidewalk can drivers and cyclists proceed.

The difference between ‘Cross Walks” and ‘Pedestrian Crossovers’ is that Pedestrian crossovers are identified by specific signs, pavement markings and lights; some have illuminated overhead lights/warning signs and pedestrian push buttons. A crosswalk is a crossing location usually found at intersections with traffic signals, pedestrian signals or stop signs.

There are four types of pedestrian crossovers in Ontario. Three of them are new designs. The City of Brockville have two types. The overhead light system that is at King Street West and Rivers Ave, and the Solar powered lights found at Ormond Street and Bramshot.
