OPP Costing Proposal Comes in Higher Than Brockville Police 2017 Budget – VIDEO

Brockville – Brockville City Council finally heard what the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) propose if they were ever selected to replace Brockville’s 185 year-old municipal police force at a special council meeting held on Wednesday night at the Brockville Memorial Centre.

It was a packed house for the meeting which saw the OPP propose an estimated transitional policing cost of $7,336,894 a year for the OPP to police the city for the first 3 years. That number does not include the one-time costs in the first year that would cost the city $8,307,478.

That is higher than the 2017 Brockville Police Service budget which is set at $7,111,796, or $7.2 million when capital costs are factored in.

The costing does not include the cost of a new police station in the city, which is required by the OPP.

That information saw Councillor Jane Fullarton introduce a notice of motion to reject the OPP costing proposal just before the end of last night’s meeting. That motion will be debated and voted on at the next council meeting set for February.

Mayor David Henderson instructed city staff at the end of last night’s meeting to halt any further action on the OPP costing matter until the notice of motion is debated and voted on in February.

The OPP proposal would see Brockville integrated into the Leeds County detachment as a separate zone within Leeds County. City council had asked for a stand-alone proposal and a station open to the public 24/7 with civilian staff as a separate option, but OPP said they do not offer that.

The notice of motion to reject the OPP proposal will be debated and voted on at council’s next regular meeting set for February 14th.

Please Note: Hometown TV12 will have the full video of the meeting online soon.
