Elizabethtown-Kitley – Two Elizabethtown-Kitley companies with long-service histories are the joint recipients of the Township’s Business of the Year Award.
Maggio Flooring & Decorating Centre, on County Road 29, has been serving its customers for over 50 years. Smiths Farm Equipment, located in Jasper, has been providing service to the farming community for 64 years. Both companies were honoured at the 25th Annual Business of the Year lunch at the Brockville Country Club on October 3rd.
“Fifty years in business didn’t happen without its trials and tribulations,” said Maggio’s Bonny Lamont, who paid tribute to the late Joe Maggio. Joe, who passed away last month, founded the business in 1968 in his garage. He would later build a larger store and showroom in Elizabethtown-Kitley where the business continues to operate today.
“If you asked Joe why he didn’t retire, he would simply tell you because he loved what he did,” Bonny said.
Smiths Farm Equipment is a multi-generational family business. It began as a small work garage which has now developed into a large agricultural dealership. “We’re in our fourth generation now,” said owner Rob Smith. It was started by his grandfather, Raymond, then was carried on by his father, Richard. Rob’s son, Chris, is now with the company. “We’re deeply honoured to be nominated and to be one of two selected, ” he said.
Also nominated this year were Pricedex Software, Hall’s Apple Market and 1000 Islands Miniature Golf & Driving Range. The award is presented by the Township Council and the Economic Development Committee.
