Brockville – February is “Heart Month” and St. John Ambulance wants everyone across Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark to be ready to step in and help save the life of a person suffering a cardiac event.
When most people think of a heart attack, they think CPR or Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) but those steps are just links in the Chain of Survival™. There are several links that must come together to ensure the best survival outcome for a casualty, they include:
Immediate Recognition: The longer a casualty waits to get medical intervention the more damage will occur. If you suspect that you or someone else has suffered a heart attack call 9-1- 1 immediately
Early CPR: If a person collapses from a cardiac event begin Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) immediately
Rapid Defibrillation: If available apply an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and if advised administer a shock.
Effective Advance Life Support: Emergency Medical Service personnel are equipped with important tools and medications that can help stabilize cardiac patients until they get to the hospital.
Integrated Post-Cardiac Arrest Care: You’ve survived the heart attack, now it’s time to work with your cardiologist to ensure you never experience another event of this scale. Medication, exercise, dietary/lifestyle changes are all options your healthcare team will explore to ensure your long term success.
