Lanark County – Officers from the Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are seeking to warn the public of an active fraud that is victimizing people in our community.
The latest variations of “Emergency Funds” theme involves meeting strangers through online sites and the development of a social media relationship over weeks before a series of alleged misfortunes arise that require money to be forwarded.
The first step may be the new contact will not be able to keep the site account open and can only communicate by email. Often the story involves being stranded outside Canada.
Online frauds are evolving all the time and new technology provides those who prey on the public greater opportunities beyond the reach of phone scams.
OPP advise the public to treat requests for funds or banking information in these circumstances as if they would treat unsolicited requests from strangers.
