Brockville – More than 1,200 students from 77 schools across the Upper Canada District School Board competed Thursday in the 2017 Upper Canada Cup Cross Country Championships.
Thousand Islands Secondary School won the banner for top intermediate team, while Westminster Public School took the junior team championship in races which included participants from the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education.
Co-convener Kyle Taugher said the event helps the Board meet its wellness goals for its students. Runners from Grades 4 to 8 use the Championships, and preceding meets, to improve their overall conditioning.
“This isn’t an easy event,” said Taugher of the Championships, held at Memorial Park. “They’re running hard for a long ways and they put all they have into it. It prepares them well for the future, teaching skills such as perseverance, resiliency and striving to do their best.”
