Johnstown – Giant Tiger hosted a welcome event for the Edwardsburgh-Cardinal community on Saturday, September 30th to show-off its new state-of-the-art distribution centre in Johnstown.
Thousands came out to the event which featured speeches, a ribbon cutting, live music, a charity bbq, a kids zone, touch a truck and a sneak peak at the new warehouse.
The new facility occupies approximatley 600,000 square feet of warehouse and office space in the Johnstown Industrial Park in Edwardsburgh-Cardinal Township.
When the new distribution centre opens in early 2018 it will begin to phase in about 300 workers, said Mike Quinn, vice-president of warehousing and distribution at Giant Tiger.
Quinn said when they were looking to consolidate its Ottawa non-perishable warehouses into one, that the Johnstown location was perfect.
The number of employees is expected to increase in the future with Giant Tiger planning to open 15 new stores a year. Currently there are more than 240 Giant Tiger stores across Canada.
Giant Tiger also has a frozen and refrigerated warehouse facility located in Brockville, which will not be affected by the new warehouse in Johnstown.
