Brockville – Phase 1 is now complete. On this 50th Anniversary, our Golden Hawk has been restored and repainted to its original colours and stands guard over the waterfront of Brockville. We wish to re-dedicate this memorial by following the original ceremony of 1968, reflecting on the past and looking towards the future. This ceremony is scheduled for Friday September 14, 2018 at 10:00am.
The Canadian Forces Snowbirds, 431 Air Demonstration Squadron will grace our city’s airways with a flypast at the conclusion of a commemorative ceremony being held on Blockhouse Island at 10:00 am Friday, September 14, 2018. The Snowbirds are the successors of Canada’s first aerobatic flying team, the Golden Hawks, and we are delighted that they will be honouring our veterans and our city in this special way.
The ceremony will recognize the 50th anniversary of the establishment of this City war memorial and the completion of Phase 1 of the restoration project. It will follow the same format of the original dedication ceremony held at this site in June, 1968.
The F-86 Sabre Jet mounted on Blockhouse Island was one flown by the famous RCAF Aerobatic Team the Golden Hawks which performed from 1959 to 1964 across North America. In 1968, #23649 was purchased and erected by 426 Wing and maintained by the City of Brockville. On June 23 1968, it was dedicated as a War Memorial in honour of the airmen that flew similar aircraft in battle, but did not return.
Phase 2 will involve improving and upgrading the landscaping around the base of the monument to complete the job. This was never covered by the City contract and therefore we have embarked on a fund raising drive including a special tribute performance of Silver Wings, by AJ Benoit and Company, to be held at the Brockville Arts Centre, Saturday September 22, 2018 at 7:30pm.
Tickets on sale. Hope you can join us for both events
