Brockville – Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) defeated Perth and District Collegiate Institute (PDCI) 33-32 Tuesday to take the Upper Canada Cup Intermediate Girls’ Basketball Championship in Perth.
“I am so proud of our girls,” said Coach Joe Wilson of the victory over their hosts. “They really persevered today. They had to play five full-court games and they did so with grit and determination.”
The TISS victory was sealed by Lily-May Berriman, who in the final 20 seconds of the game drew a foul on a layup. With TISS down 32-31, Berriman sunk two free throws to give TISS the championship.
Other factors in the win were Mercedez Covey’s back-to-back three pointers at the start of the game, which cut Perth’s 10-0 lead and sparked TISS play. Michelle Olak also
played aggressively around the rim, which led to many rebounds and points off the glass.
The tournament involved teams from PDCI, Carleton Place High School, TISS, North Grenville District High School, South Grenville District High School, Brockville Collegiate Institute, Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School, and Tagwi Secondary School. Play took place in the gyms at PDCI and The Stewart School.
