LOCAL STUDENTS TAKE PART IN ONTARIO’S MODEL PARLIAMENT THIS WEEK

QUEEN’S PARK – A pair of high-school students from Leeds-Grenville are experiencing a few days in the life of an MPP this week.

Richard Deeves of Westport, a student at St. Mary Catholic High School, and Max Kinlin of Edwardsburgh Cardinal Township, a student at Thousand Islands Secondary School, arrived at Queen’s Park today to take part in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario’s Model Parliament program.

MPP Steve Clark welcomed Deeves, Kinlin and 105 other students from across Ontario, who will be at Queen’s Park until Friday, during a reception with MPPs from all parties.

“I’m so pleased to have two students from Leeds-Grenville participating this year,” said Clark. “As elected officials, we have a responsibility to encourage young people to take an interest in civic affairs and the outstanding Model Parliament program is a great way to make that happen.”

Deeves will sit as the MPP for Leeds-Grenville when students take over the Chamber for a special debate on Friday. Kinlin will serve as MPP for the riding of Niagara West-Glanbrook.

In addition to Friday’s debate, participants will have a chance to meet MPPs and other officials from the legislature while also participating in workshops to learn about the legislative process and the history of Queen’s Park.

The three-day Model Parliament program is open to Ontario students in grades 10 to 12 and to learn more about how to get involved, including the application deadline, visit: http://discoveryportal.ontla.on.ca/en/youth-programs/model-parliament
