Healthy Kids Community Challenge Leeds and Grenville are launching a Power Off and Play! community initiative. This initiative is offering funding of up to $5,000 to non-profit groups and organizations for innovative projects that promote the reduction of recreational and sedentary screen time. “We encourage the community to get creative when submitting their ideas”, says Alexis Green, Co-Facilitator with the Healthy Kids Community Challenge. There are many ways to reduce screen time and replace it with other activities that don’t include using a device with a screen. Children’s play time, away from screens, supports a child’s development and contributes to their physical, social and emotional wellbeing.
Healthy Kids Community Challenge Leeds and Grenville are promoting the Healthy Kids Community Challenge’s fourth theme called Power Off and Play! This initiative will encourage kids and families to build a balanced day by replacing screen time with more physical activity. Power Off and Play! promotes powering off before sleep and during meal and snack times, and encourages physical activity, social interaction, and fun and educational activity choices for children.
“The goal of this initiative will be to make it easier for kids and families to build a balanced day filled with plenty of physical, activity, face-to-face interactions, family time and fun.”, says Green.
