Brockville – A positive attitude and can-do spirit has taken Brandon Levere far within the Youth Volunteer Crew (YVC) organization.

Recently, the 17-year-old Brockville native was honoured with the YVC volunteer of the year award “I have had the pleasure of volunteering and working with Brandon through the Youth Volunteer Crew for the past 7 months,” noted YVC Coordinator Kira Merritt. “Brandon has continued to volunteer with us well past his mandatory 40 hours and is consistently eager to help at community organizations and events regardless of the required tasks.”

She added Brandon has volunteered on a regular basis for Loaves and Fishes, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), and Community and Primary Health Care (CPHC) as well as at countless community fundraisers and special events. “Brandon is not incredibly outgoing but promotes volunteerism through providing encouragement to other volunteers, his willingness to contribute, and positive attitude at all volunteer events,” Kira explained.

Kira stated that Brandon constantly displays caring, integrity, fairness, respect, and empathy while volunteering. “Not only does Brandon take an interest in the cause of each agency we volunteer at, but he takes the time to teach and assist new volunteers at projects in the community. As a volunteer supervisor, I feel completely confident in leaving Brandon to complete tasks to the best of his ability when my attention is needed elsewhere.”

She added that Brandon is very flexible when tasks are being delegated, and is always willing to allow others the opportunity to do something they may feel more comfortable with. “Brandon always shows respect to community agencies, their clients, his fellow volunteers and supervisors despite any differences in opinion or beliefs. Brandon easily puts himself in others shoes and fully understands how his actions could affect them,” Kira said. He is in Grade 11 at Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS).

Young people between the ages of 15 and 24 are invited to volunteer with YVC, which is based at the Employment + Education Centre in Brockville Ontario. In addition to the volunteer opportunities noted above, youth volunteers regularly assist at special events in Brockville and surrounding areas.
