Brockville –Brockville General Hospital releases a second portion of its recovery plan, which is being led by provincially-appointed Supervisor, Kevin Empey.
In January, Brockville General Hospital announced a first step of their recovery plan in which restructuring was made to the leadership team. This identified savings and allowed for investments in staff education and professional practice. In the second phase, released today, BGH identified the restructuring of 14 full time equivalent staffing positions.
During this second phase, it is unclear if jobs will be lost. BGH will be working with union leadership and staff directly to minimize impact.
“Over a quarter of our staff are eligible for retirement,” shared Empey. “As a result, we’re working with departments to try to minimize the discomfort to staff. These changes are never easy. Today marks a difficult day for BGH and we thank all those affected for their service and commitment to patient care.”
Where retirement is not an option, efforts to relocate staff to alternate positions within the hospital will be made. As a final option, layoffs will be implemented in accordance with the respective collective agreements.
Despite the Hospital’s challenging financial situation, the recovery plan takes aim to poise BGH for future success.
BGH’s realigned leadership team has been working with Empey to bring hospital operations to benchmarking standards and identify cost savings. Priorities were given to changes which do not impact staff or patient care, including the elimination of vacant staffing positions and various facilities savings, like reduced window cleaning and natural gas benefits. A corporate initiative to reduce sick time will also provide benefits in the coming year.
“We have worked diligently to complete a rigorous financial analysis and review of hospital priorities,” Empey explained. “There is a lot to be done: we must balance our budget, improve staff culture and continue to provide safe, quality patient care for the residents of Leeds and Grenville.”
