BGH Announces New Chief of Staff

Brockville – Brockville General Hospital appoints Dr. Rob Malone as new Chief of Staff. In late September, Dr. David Goldstein, Brockville General Hospital’s current Chief of Staff, announced his decision to retire from the Hospital.

The Chief of Staff reports to the Board of Directors, and oversees all medical departments and staff, including divisions that have chiefs as well. Currently, BGH has 11 medical departments, including Anesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine/Hospitalist, Women and Children’s Program, Pathology, Psychiatry, Rehab Medicine, Critical Care and Surgery.

Over the past weeks, the Hospital developed a search committee, led by Kevin Empey, BGH’s provincially-appointed Supervisor, and included medical leadership and representatives from the Hospital’s new Board of Directors.

“During my time at BGH, Dr. Goldstein has been a key advisor and a highly regarded member of the Senior Leadership Team, Medical Advisory Committee and Anaesthesiology Department. I’d like to thank David for his dedication and wish him all the best in his life’s next chapter. I am confident Dr. Malone will be a valuable addition to the leadership team, and will help BGH’s
medical teams to create a strong path of success.” said Kevin Empey, Supervisor, BGH

Dr. Malone has a long-standing history with the Hospital. He has been the Chief of Psychiatry and member of the Medical Advisory Committee at BGH since 2000. He has shown strong leadership in hospital initiatives, including Accreditation, a computer physician order entry (CPOE) pilot project, the credentialing process and support in many regional initiatives.

Dr. Malone has shown a commitment to learning and teaching. In addition to leading over 16 presentations and participating in over 21 conferences on Mental Health and healthcare issues, he has received a multitude of awards. Most recently, he received the Excellence in
Undergraduate Teaching award from Queen’s Department of Psychiatry in 2016.

“Dr. Malone’s appointment to Chief of Staff marks a renewed focus and commitment to the BGH’s medical departments. Working with Nick Vlacholias, President and CEO, and the Board of Directors, we anticipate a bright future for BGH.” said Jim Cooper, Co-Chair, Board of Directors, BGH

Dr. Malone is a highly regarded by fellow staff and physicians, and is an active member of the BGH community. In 2014, he was the keynote speaker at the Hospital’s Annual General Meeting and in 2013 he was nominated by BGH staff for the Workplace Happiness Action Team’s Team Member of the Year award.

Over the coming weeks, Dr. Malone and Dr. Goldstein will be working closely to ensure a smooth transition. Dr. Malone officially takes over the position on November 6, 2017.

“For over 17 years, I have worked with the medical, clinical and administrative teams at BGH. Despite the challenges we have faced, I am excited and energized by this new opportunity and look forward to helping BGH reach its full potential.” said Dr. Rob Malone, Chief of Staff, BGH
