Brockville – Kevin Empey, Brockville General Hospital’s provincially-appointed supervisor, announces next steps in developing a new Board of Directors.
In July, the Hospital welcomed Nick Vlacholias as president and chief executive officer, which ends a series of strategic changes to the hospital’s leadership structure. This readies the organization to shift into standard operations while the supervisor redefines the governance structure.
Empey has been considering various ways to establish new independent governance. He has had the hospital advertise, and has worked closely with a number of community advisors, which included Jim Cooper and David Beatty. With a desire to ensure that the renewed Hospital gets off to a great start, we are announcing that both men will be the initial directors to the Hospital’s new board.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have Jim and David’s support. These men are committed to the Hospital’s success. If history repeats itself, we will see incredible success under their leadership. I look forward to working closely with them to round out the board and to set them on course for a highly impactful governance team.” said Kevin Empey, Hospital Supervisor, Brockville General Hospital
Cooper, who has close ties with the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation, will serve as co-chair with Empey through this fiscal year. Beatty, a major philanthropist and past chair of the Board has committed for a one-year term to assist with the transition.
“As we enter a new chapter in the evolution of our hospital I look forward to working closely with Mr. Vlacholias and the board to guide a successful future for BGH. The core of a community’s infrastructure is its hospital. Through Mr. Empey’s work, we now have the foundation … let’s build!” said Jim Cooper, Co-Chair, Board of Directors, Brockville General Hospital
Cooper, the president of local manufacturer, Canarm, was recently bestowed an honorary diploma from St. Lawrence College. He is a longtime supporter of BGH’s palliative care program as the golf tournament’s co-chair and is a past chairman of Brockville and Area YMCA board. Cooper was recognized as Brockville’s Citizen of the Year in 2013. To join the Hospital’s board, he has recently stepped down as a member of the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation board.
Beatty, Canarm’s chairman and chief executive officer, also has a history steeped within the community. An advocate for many, his affiliations include Brockville Kiwanis Club, Brockville and Area YMCA, Brockville YMCA Foundation, Grenville Christian College, St. Lawrence College, and the St. Lawrence College Foundation. Beatty served as a Councillor in Brockville from 2010 to 2014, and was recognized as Brockville’s Citizen of the Year in 2004. No stranger to BGH, Beatty sat on the Hospital’s board from 1990 to 2000 (sitting as chairman from 1995 to 1997), and as a director of the Foundation from 1995 to 2004 (and as chairman from 1997 to 1999).
“A well-functioning community hospital is vital to the interests of our area. As the provincially appointed supervisor, Kevin Empey, has done a wonderful job of guiding BGH down a sustainable path, re-constituting the Board of Directors is a key step in this process to self-sufficiency. With Kevin Empey and Jim Cooper agreeing to Co-Chair the board, strong leadership in our Governance is insured. I look forward to working with them and all BGH stakeholders as we enter onto an exciting new chapter in our hospital’s history.” said David Beatty, Director, Board of Directors, Brockville General Hospital
Empey will continue to interview and recruit through August, anticipating to announce the Hospital’s new Board late in August. He is targeting that the Board will have around 12 voting members and begin regular meetings later this fall.
