Annual Refugee Island Breakfast Afloat for 2017

Organizers encourage buying advance tickets due to sell out last year

BROCKVILLE – Despite water levels on the St. Lawrence being at an all-time high, it hasn’t dampened the spirits or the plans of the Island Breakfast Committee of Brockville.

The annual Refugee Island outing will take place June 21st through 24th, come rain or shine.

Now in its fourth year, boats will depart from the foot of St. Lawrence Park each morning of the event starting at 7 a.m. with the last departure from the park at 10 a.m. Breakfast features local or locally sponsored fare including bacon, eggs, ham, toast, beans, pancakes, coffee, juice and strawberries.

The funds will support the construction of a permanent pavilion for the island and to date, more than 50 people and companies have stepped up to be sponsors of the legacy project this year. Contributing sponsors to the project will be acknowledged permanently once the pavilion is constructed.

Leading the way this year as presenting sponsors are Investors Group, Downtown Brockville and Mapleview Homes who each have contributed to offset the costs of hosting the ever-popular event. Following this year, the Committee hopes to have over 50% of its fund raising goal of $75,000 achieved.

This year, due to the high water levels, the event will take place on the southwest side of the island.

“We had a Plan B if we were unable to access the island, but after a visit last week we’ve devised a solution that will keep everything above sea level!” explained Byron Boone, Volunteer Spokesperson for the event.

“Support by the local community has been outstanding and the committee would like to thank the companies and individuals for contributing to the project. Ticket and merchandise sales along with contributions to the donation jars help offset the costs of running the event,” Boone said.

Island Breakfast has been attended by the local community and tourists alike, giving those who could not otherwise experience island life, the chance to do so. Last year more than 2,000 people attended the event over 4 days. Island Breakfast is made possible through over 200 volunteers and sponsors.

Advance tickets are on sale at the Brockville Tourism Office (Market Street): $12 for adults, $10 for students/seniors, $8 for children under 10 years and $30 for a family of 4. Prices on the days of the event are: $15 adults, $12 seniors/students, $10 children and $35 for a family of 4. Golf carts will be available for transportation to and from the launch area in St. Lawrence Park.

The event sold out last year so organizers encourage people to buy soon to avoid disappointment.
