Brockville – The citizens’ committee, raising funds to rebuild the historic five mile lighthouse, announced earlier this week a significant donation from Brockville businessman Dave Beatty towards their $200,000 goal.
On Tuesday morning at the Aquatarium, Beatty presented committee members with a $25,000 cheque bringing the total raised to date to $140,000.
Committee chair, Bob Runciman, described the donation as a “turning point” in the campaign. “Once again Dave Beatty has displayed how deeply he cares about this community and his donation today puts us within striking distance of achieving our goal. I’m very optimistic”, he said.
Beatty, a long time boater, described the lighthouse which was destroyed by fire following a lightning strike last July, as an historic landmark for the region and a helpful guide to local and visiting boaters.
“For local boaters especially, it has been a comforter and a reliable reminder to stay away from some very nasty shoals in the Cole Bay Area”, he added. Beatty also encouraged others to help the campaign and hopefully see the rebuild project completed this year.
Runciman also announced that the committee is in the process of organizing a fundraising reception in May with Ontario Tourism Minister Michael Tibolo as the special guest.
