2018 Skate The Lake in Portland Set for This Weekend – VIDEO

Portland – The 2018 Edition of Skate The Lake is being held this weekend, February 17th & 18, 2018 on the Big Rideau Lake in Portland.

This year, Skate the Lake has been moved for one year from January to this weekend Sat. Feb 17th & Sun. Feb 18th. Organizers say they have a large contingent of skaters  coming from the Netherlands. Portland is their first of three skating events in Canada. On the Saturday they will have a 100K, non-competitive but timed race.

They will be serving nourishment for the skaters on the ice during the race. All the other traditional races will be held on the Sunday. This is also Family Day weekend so  bring the family and enjoy the many activities that Skate the Lake has to offer.

The opening ceremonies begin at 8:30am on the Saturday followed by the start of STL 100K Invitational Tour at 9:00am (registration for 100K closes at 8:30am). There will be  a Ham & Bean Dinner at the Portland Hall after the race from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Call Connie 613 272-6747 or Marcia 613 283-7893 for tickets.

Other activities off the oval on the Saturday will include, an Ice Stock demo hosted by the Kingston and Area Ice Stock Club, free kids skating, food concessions featuring  hot chocolate, Skate tails, ‘Snert’ and Chili, Public skating on the oval to music after the final race, and several warming areas and bonfires.

On the Sunday are the above activities along with youth curling and fireworks after the last race at dusk.

The first race on Sunday is at 9:00am with the start of the 5K competitive race (registration for 5K closes at 8:30am). 9:45am is the start of the 10Krace (registration for  10K closes at 9:15 am) followed by the Start of the 25 & 50K races at 11:00am (registration for 25 & 50K closes at 10:30 am).

The Kids 5k race begins at 2:30pm (registration closes at 2:00 pm) Helmets Mandatory followed by the 5 x 1K Relay race at 3:30pm (registration for Relay closes at 3:00 pm).

Friday, Feb 16th STL encourage the use of helmets on the oval

8am – 2pm Ice Prep

2-4 pm Oval open practice and referee inspection of the track

2 – 6 pm Registration trailer open for pre-registration & pick up of race packages

Saturday, Feb 17th

7:30 am Registration Trailer open for Registration

8:30 am Opening Ceremonies

9:00 am Start of STL 100K Invitational Tour (registration for 100K closes at 8:30am)
