Two other key messages of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge Leeds and Grenville are “enjoy meals and snacks together” and “Get kids involved”. There are many factors that influence children and their eating habits. Eating meals together and involving kids with meal planning and preparation has a positive impact on their food choices now as well as later on in life. Kids learn about food by watching others and are more likely to eat veggies and fruit when they see adults and other children eating and enjoying these foods. They also tend to eat more veggies and fruit when they are involved with the planning and preparation.
Some ways to get kids of all ages involved with food could be having them choose a recipe to try that highlights a new vegetable, having them help with planting and maintaining a container, backyard or community garden, or picking out a new veggie or fruit at the grocery store. Whatever works for you, just involve them!
