Cornwall – Cornwall Community Hospital’s Chemotherapy Unit celebrates it’s 2nd birthday today!
The needs continue to grow in our community. The Chemotherapy Unit has administered 1494 treatments over these first 2 years. “This department has real impact on the quality of life for patients and families by preventing the stress of travel, the cost of gas, food and out of town parking. We are proud to deliver on such an impactful commitment,” expressed Jeanette Despatie, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cornwall Hospital.
Cornwall Hospital partners with the Ottawa Cancer Centre at the Ottawa Hospital on this initiative. To ensure that all cancer patients across the province can expect the same standard of care, the service is monitored by Cancer Care Ontario (CCO). The Chemotherapy unit at Cornwall Hospital began by treating patients with genitourinary (affecting the urinary tract) and lung cancers but has since expanded to treating breast, colon, pancreas, stomach, intestine, head and neck types of cancers. In May of 2017, the hospital began participating in a “home chemo” program, where patients have the chemotherapy initiated at the hospital and continued at home.
