Kemptville – A team from Thousand Islands Secondary School (TISS) won first overall at the Eastern Ontario Math League Tournament, held Friday, November 30 at St. Michael Catholic High School in Kemptville.
The team, comprised of Joel Bartlett, Troy Gonidis, Edwin Mooney and Lucas Vicente, beat 31 other teams from Catholic and public schools across Eastern Ontario. Gonidis also won the individual competition.
“We are known in the community for our athletic programs, but this shows we are a really strong academic school as well,” said Kevin Gray, co-coach of the TISS Mathletes team.
The senior-level competition is run by the Kingston Math League. It is designed to help students discover the joy of mathematics through demonstrating their skills in a competitive setting. Students compete in individual rounds, team rounds and then the top competitors participate in a Jeopardy-style round to determine the individual champion.
In team competition, Smiths Falls and District Collegiate Institute placed second, and third was taken by Brockville Collegiate institute.
