Smiths Falls – A team from Queen Elizabeth Public School won the 2019 Regional Popsicle Stick Bridge Championship, held Thursday, April 4 at Duncan J. Schoular Public School in Smiths Falls.
This competition challenges students to build bridges out of popsicle sticks and glue to see which will hold the most weight when stress tested. The competition is held in partnership with the Thousand Islands Chapter of Professional Engineers of Ontario and provides students with some insight into the world of engineering.
Grade 6 students Manny Benda, Jack Lundholm and Will Weeks took the top spot by posting a load of 179.5 kilograms, more than doubling that of their nearest competitor.
“It was a little surprising,” said Lundholm. “We were hoping for around 100 kilograms but we were well over expectations and it feels really great.”
Lundholm credits the design’s symmetry and use of additional crossbeams as the key to the team’s success.
Second place went to Fisher Horn, Matthew Frazer and Tanner Campbell, of Perth and District Collegiate Institute, with a 78.7 kilogram load. Allissa Frizell and Safire Kilgour, of Duncan J. Schoular Public School, took third with 75.8 kilograms.
