Dundas Manor: A Bicycle Built for Two.. or Three!

Talk about inspiring joy and happiness. Dundas Manor’s new bicycle built for three is doing just that – all over town!

Just ask Penny Barr. Her husband David is a Dundas Manor resident and has dementia. Recently, they took a ride together. “That day was just glorious,” Penny remembers. “David had a sense of laughter and happiness with the breeze in his face. It was so calming for him.”

Dundas Manor is the first long-term care home in Ontario to buy the bike from Copenhagen. The idea came from volunteer Dianne Lee, who saw a story on television. “This shows the power of our volunteers. We had one look and knew we had to have one,” notes Jennifer Hill, Activity Programs and Services Director. “After months of research, training and preparation, we are ready to go. And we are having so much fun. The expression on each resident’s face is priceless.”

To date, 15 residents have had a ride and more trips are planned each week as part of the new Sunshine Club. “People just smile when they see us coming,” adds Jennifer. “Some people do a double take and almost everyone waves. It’s so much fun.”

Penny Barr agrees. “I can take David in the car anytime, but the fresh air is so nice. It’s the most incredible thing.”
