Lyndhurst – Even the pouring rain didn’t dampen the spirits of a dedicated group of volunteers and friends, who came out to brighten the day for a Lyndhurst boy celebrating his 13th birthday today.
It has been a few years since we first met Ethan, back in the days when our community was fundraising for his service dog. It was a lot of work, and then began the training. Ethan was matched with Molly and life for this family would never again be the same. The difference between Ethan pre-match, and after being paired with his sweet Molly are day and night. In some ways, it feels like we have watched Ethan grow up right before our eyes. To say the pair were best friends is a serious understatement. Sadly, Molly fell ill with an aggressive form of cancer a few weeks ago, and passed soon after. Many wondered what they might do to help.
One member of Ethan’s page took action and posted a social distancing friendly event notice inviting readers to join a birthday parade in Ethan’s honour. It wasn’t long before members were sharing the post and pledging their support. A separate card rally was also prepared to be sent by mail for those who couldn’t attend the parade.
Covid-19 has put a damper on many plans and events for all of us, but for just a few short moments in time none of that mattered; lights flashed, horns honked, people waved, and many gifts were passed through windows as folks drove by.
Well done community, well done. Happy Birthday Ethan!
